Color it out! is a spoken game for improved literacy and pronunciation

*Update (7/1/16): “Color Vowel Duo” has been rebranded as Color it out!® Thank you for your support!

Our Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign has launched, and we need your help to reach our goal by 12 noon (EST) on Monday, April 18th, 2016.

Consider this:

1) Color Vowel Duo is a revolutionary game.

2) ELTS is a passionate but small publishing company.

3) Printing is expensive, but the more you print at one time, the less it costs per item.

Color Vowel Duo is a revolutionary game.

Color Vowel Duo bridges the gap between spoken and written English. Our unique, patent-pending use of Color Vowel® images and mark-ups cues the learner to succeed in saying words that are otherwise difficult to read, such as enoughthough, and through. Integrated into authentic play, learners gain confidence and expand their spoken vocabulary, knowing that enough is MUSTARD, though is ROSE, and through is BLUE. In a world where one spelling pattern can represent three (or more!) different sounds, Color Vowel Duo makes learning easy and interesting.

ELTS is a passionate but small publishing company.
English Language Training Solutions is a tight-knit team of educational linguists with decades of experience in language learning and literacy. Karen Taylor and Shirley Thompson, co-founders of ELTS and both former Fulbright scholars, created the Color Vowel® Chart in 1999 to help international graduate students deliver their lectures comprehensibly.

The Color Vowel® Chart is a visual organizer for spoken English that replaces phonetic symbols with colors. Early adoption by the U.S. Department of State has propelled our work to international acclaim.

In 2014, ESL teacher Laura McIndoo designed a game using the Color Vowel Chart as its underlying architecture: Color Vowel® DUO. She piloted it with her own adult ESL students and was astounded by the response: Students insisted on buying their own sets to take home and play with their families.

With feedback from our pilot schools and an overwhelming demand for the game, we realized we’ve created something unprecedented: a fun, compelling language game that bridges schools and home learning for native and non-native speakers of English.

ELTS piloted Duo in 2015 with hand-picked school districts across the country. In one class, the prototype was so popular that it was in tatters within a month. The teacher begged for a more durable deck, and that’s exactly what we intend to do: print DUO on durable, industry-standard cards, give it proper packaging, and to make it more widely available at an affordable price.

Printing is expensive, but the more you print at one time, the less it costs.

With your contribution, it’s a win-win: you’ll be supporting ELTS with the funds we need to manufacture a large run of Color Vowel Duo, and you’ll be one of the first people to receive and play the new DUO. What could be better than that?

Visit our Kickstarter page, and you’ll see a variety of reward options, including options where you can help your local school district or library by contributing. Your generous contribution can be a “twofer”– it will help us print our big run of Duo, and the school or library of your choice will receive a set of Duo!

Duo is truly unique: We urge you to support this special game: a language game that is accessible to all ages and language backgrounds, genuinely fun and compelling, and equally effective in the classroom and at home. Playing Duo enhances the English language learning experience for emerging readers, ESL students, international students, and anyone who loves to play with language.

 Get English. Get Duo.
